Today we "moved on down the road", down I-75 to Valdosta GA to Grassy Pond Recreation Area which is a morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) facility for Moody Air Force Base. This is stop #8 for us. Just a couple nights here then on to Florida.
Although Grassy Pond is part of the Air Force, somewhere along the line they opened it up to the public, so you don't have to be in the military or retired military to use it. The military gets a discounted rate here.
We arrived and chose one of the vacant sites, and got the RV all set up. Then we walked down to the office and registered. We had reservations here, which just guarantees you a spot but not an assigned spot. Luckily there were a couple nice long pull-through sites available and we pounced on that.
The campground is just one part of the recreation area. They have 39 RV sites and 19 cabins. They also have good selection of boats and pontoons to rent, some shelters for unit parties, etc. It is a very nice place and we are glad we decided to stop here. More pictures:
After we got all settled, checked in , etc we headed for Moody Air Force Base to visit the commissary (grocery store) and base exchange (BX). I served over 42 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard and never made it to Moody Air Force Base, so this was my first visit here. Moody is the home of the 23d Wing and they fly HC-130J's, HH-60G helicopters and A-10C attack aircraft. The HH-60's here tells me they likely have a Rescue Squadron like that which my son-in-law TSgt James Buehner served in Alaska. Having served so long in the Air Force, coming to a place like Moody or any active duty base and seeing all the Airmen busy performing the mission makes me proud, very proud!
The last stop at Fair Harbor, and this stop at Grassy Pond are both interim stops, just a couple nights at each, before we land in Florida. We have no plans for tomorrow at this time. We've been to the base and have no reason to go back. Doreen wants to do a couple loads of laundry. Other than that, we will see what happens. It is nice to not be in a hurry, and be able to take a down day from time to time and just relax. We even talked about renting a boat and just cruising the lake. We will see..! Hope you enjoy following along!
