12 Aug - Arrived at Camp Atterbury, Edinburgh IN

This morning we bugged out of Buckeye Lake KOA near Columbus OH just after 0800 hrs and arrived at Camp Atterbury at 1300 hrs traveling 230 miles with one potty stop and one fuel stop.  We ran into some really crappy roads including I-70 in Ohio and one other spot.  In some cases the outside (slower vehicle) lane was terrible and the inside lane looks like it had been resurfaced.  We only travel around 60mph so changing lanes was not an option.  When we arrived and set up the camper, Doreen discovered one of the closet doors was broken as was the latch on the fireplace.  The refrigerator was a disaster and other cabinets were jumbled.  I was able to repair both the closet door and the fireplace.  I think the only roads we've been on that have been that bad was I-10 in Louisiana.

On the trip today we got to see some of the Indiana farmland as the GPS routed us on a few county roads.  They were really in great condition but very narrow so as we met typically other pickups things got a little hairy!

So right at 1300 hrs we rolled into Camp Atterbury.  The Department of Defense is ramping up COVID precautions again so we both had a forehead thermal scan coming in the gate.  After that we made our way to the lodging office and they were expecting us, which is a good thing.  From there a two block drive to the campground, called Whitaker Place.

Camp Atterbury is an Army National Guard training facility, so there are times when it is crazy busy, and other times it can be very quiet.  They are supposed to have some sort of shooting competition going on right now so we will see how busy it is.  It has a history back to World War II where there was a prison of war encampment here.  This stone was engraved by Italians during that time.

Whitaker Place is a really nice campground with 33 full hookup sites seven of which are pull-thru's and we have one of them.  The sites are gravel but they are level and good spacing between sites.  They have a small laundry mat right here in the campground and it is free.  WE have good satellite reception here and the cellular connectivity is adequate.  Here are a few campground pictures around our site:

We have one of the few trees in the campground and it is pretty small.

Large gravel patio area with a picnic table and fire ring

Good spacing between neighbors

We don't have any huge plans while here other than attending an Indianapolis Indians (Pirates AAA) baseball game where our friend from Norwalk, Joel Hanrahan, is the pitching coach.  We've been here before and visited most of the museums, the Indy track, the Cummins museum, etc but we will seek out some "nuggets" here and enjoy the four nights we will be here before moving north to Elkhart IN and the Alliance RV Rally!!  I will refresh the stats once we get there.
