We studied the maps and Internet this morning and decided to avoid the crowds this weekend and postpone most of the touring until the first of the week. So we had a leisurely day starting out the morning at a local farmer's market. As we entered we passed a beautiful educational garden provided by the Virginia Beach Master Gardener Volunteers.
The farmer's market consisted of a variety of fruit and vegetable stands along with craft and jewelry shops, a meat market and a bakery. Doreen picked up some tomatoes and other veggies for us and a few souvenirs.
Next stop was the "Lucky Oyster" restaurant, and opportunity to have a little more seafood before we head inland to our next campground. The eight oysters (Rockefeller) I had were not so "lucky", but they sure were good!! Oysters on the half shell with bacon, spinach and cheese under the broiler. They were really good. Doreen is not much on seafood but she is doing pretty well with regular fish sandwiches, fish and chips, and today with fish tacos.
A nice lager and Doreen's Cranberry Crush. Delicious!

We headed back to the campground and chilled out this afternoon a bit and then took a couple walks including one on the beach. Doreen's walked the beach previously but I had not. So we entered at the north end of our campground and then walked all the way down to the exit that leads to the end of the south campground. There are only certain areas where you can cross the dunes and enter or exit the beach. They have provided boardwalks at those locations. One of the primary reasons why they typically provided designated entrances/exits is to minimize damage to the dunes which are nesting areas for various critters. Here, there is another reason why they want you to stay on the designated paths! These signs tell the tale!
The area between the beach and the campground used to be a mortar range and there are what we call UXO's, or UneXploded Ordinance in the dunes! UXO's can be very unstable and very dangerous, so therefore you stay on the boardwalks and don't wander around on the dunes!
Tomorrow's plan includes visiting Fort Story and the Cape Henry Lighthouse(s). Yes there are two of them! The old one which you can climb, and the new one which is still in use and cannot be climbed.
